At the next appointment, the titanium post is surgically placed in your jaw under a local anaesthetic. If your treatment requires multiple posts, they can be fitted in the same appointment. The gum is given time to heal while the screw and bone integration takes place.

After a few months, an appointment will be scheduled to take an impression of your mouth. The customised prosthetic tooth created from this impression is then anchored onto the post.

After the implant has been fitted you can expect swelling and tenderness, and you may wish to rest while the effects of the anaesthetic are wearing off. Although you may feel OK to return to work on the same day as the treatment, you should keep activity levels to a minimum.

You can also expect some slight bleeding which can be absorbed by applying a damp gauze to the affected area. Swelling and tenderness may occur for up to 7 days after treatment, which can be managed through over-the-counter pain relief if your dentist advises. While the area is healing you may wish to avoid hard foods and hot / cold temperatures.
