What To Expect During Your Appointment

The first step of the implant process is to understand your requirements. Our team at Kai Dental will address any general queries you have regarding the treatment.

After our dentist conducts a thorough, oral assessment, they will methodically explain the procedure. An x-ray will be taken of your mouth to determine its viability for the process.

At the next appointment, the titanium post is surgically placed in your jaw under a local anaesthetic. If your treatment requires multiple posts, they can be fitted in the same appointment. The gum is given time to heal while the screw and bone integration takes place.

After a few months, an appointment will be scheduled to take an impression of your mouth. The customised prosthetic tooth created from this impression is then anchored onto the post.

The advantages of opting for dental implants:

The implants bond with the jawbone, making them strong. With good oral hygiene, dental implants offer you a long-term solution to missing teeth.

Dental implants are versatile, as they can be used to secure a single tooth, multiple teeth (through a bridge) or even an entire set of teeth.

They closely match the feel, function, and look of your teeth, giving you a natural appearance and bite.

Implant retained dentures are a type of overdentures anchored onto dental implant surgical posts. The implants provide additional support to the overdentures.

Recovery & Aftercare

After the implant has been fitted you can expect swelling and tenderness, and you may wish to rest while the effects of the anaesthetic are wearing off. Although you may feel OK to return to work on the same day as the treatment, you should keep activity levels to a minimum.

You can also expect some slight bleeding which can be absorbed by applying a damp gauze to the affected area. Swelling and tenderness may occur for up to 7 days after treatment, which can be managed through over-the-counter pain relief if your dentist advises. While the area is healing you may wish to avoid hard foods and hot / cold temperatures.

FAQS

Can Dental Implants Treat Bone Loss?

The titanium posts are embedded into the jawbone. The number of posts required depends on the type of dentures you choose. A temporary denture will be provided to you during the osseointegration process. After your jaw has healed, the overdenture will be moulded and fixed onto the implant with an abutment holding it in place.

If a patient is missing all their teeth or suffering from extensive bone loss, implant-retained dentures may be the right option. These are fixed to the arch with special attachments instead of an adhesive which increases stability, reducing excessive movement during chewing. Lack of suction means a secure fit, and this reduces gum friction.

Ask a Kai Dental professional about which implant retained dentures suit your dental needs.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial substitute for a tooth root. They support crowns, bridges or dentures, comparable to the way that roots provide a foundation to natural teeth.

Am I a suitable candidate for the procedure?

Adults in good physical condition are usually suitable for the procedure. Our team at Kai Dental will evaluate your general health, discuss any medical conditions, and examine your gums and teeth to determine your viability for the procedure.

Rest assured that our dental implant parts are high grade, competitively priced, and the best that you’ll find in Queensway, Bayswater.

Is an individual implant needed for every missing tooth?

This is not necessary, as a single post can provide support to one tooth or multiple teeth. Dentures can also be attached to a set of implants. After an oral assessment, our dentist can determine the number of implants that suit your requirements.

Is the procedure painful?

We aim to make the process as pain-free as possible. A local anaesthetic will be administered during the surgery. You may also take a sedative if you are anxious.

What is the duration of the implant treatment?

The timeframe of the process differs for every patient, as it depends on the severity of the case and the treatment recommended. In a single session, multiple posts may be attached if required. The Implant is then given time to fuse with the bone. The entire process can take between several weeks and six months. If the original bone structure is weaker or any gum procedure is required, the treatment could take longer.

Are there any known side-effects associated with the treatment?

In some cases, there may be unwanted effects, such as swelling or uneasiness in the area surrounding the implant. However, this is only temporary, and over-the-counter painkillers can be consumed for relief. In case of persistent discomfort following the surgery, please contact the dentist.

How long can the implant last?

An implant can be as long-lasting as your natural teeth if proper oral hygiene practises are followed. This includes looking after your implant as you would your normal teeth and going for routine dental check-ups.

How do I take care of the implant?

Your dental care routine for an implant is the same as that of your natural teeth. You must follow appropriate cleaning and flossing techniques on your replacement tooth. Regular visits to your dental hygienist and dentist are important, as it will help them to monitor the condition of your implant and aid in maintenance.
