An appointment with the Hygienist doesn’t usually cause downtime, as in most cases the teeth have been given a thorough clean and polish. Removal of plaque and calculus from the teeth are procedures known as debridement and prophylaxis. The ‘aftercare’ required following these techniques will be with the aim of reducing future build up of these substances on the surface of the teeth. This may include reducing / monitoring the amount of sugary foods / drinks and acidic foods that are consumed, as well as twice daily brushing, regular flossing and use of mouthwash.

FAQS

Why is dental hygiene important?

Dental hygiene is crucial for maintaining overall oral health. It helps prevent tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, and other oral issues. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups remove plaque and tartar, preventing the buildup of harmful bacteria that can lead to more serious dental problems.

How often should I brush my teeth?

It is recommended to brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally after meals. Brushing removes plaque and food particles, preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Remember to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and brush gently in a circular motion to avoid damaging your gums.

Is flossing really necessary?

Yes, flossing is an essential part of dental hygiene. Brushing alone cannot effectively clean the tight spaces between teeth and along the gumline. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from these areas, reducing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Aim to floss at least once a day, preferably before brushing.

How often should I visit the dentist?

Regular dental check-ups are important for maintaining optimal oral health. Most dentists recommend visiting every six months for a routine examination and professional cleaning. However, the frequency may vary depending on your individual dental needs. Your dentist will advise you on the appropriate schedule based on your oral health condition.

Are there any additional steps I can take to improve dental hygiene?

Yes, there are several additional steps you can take to enhance your dental hygiene routine. These include:

– Using mouthwash: Rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash to help kill bacteria and freshen breath.

– Limiting sugary and acidic foods: Reduce your consumption of sugary snacks and beverages, as they contribute to tooth decay. Acidic foods and drinks can erode tooth enamel, so it’s best to consume them in moderation.

– Avoiding tobacco products: Smoking and using tobacco products can increase the risk of gum disease and oral cancer. Quitting or avoiding these habits can significantly improve your dental and overall health.

– Drinking plenty of water: Water helps rinse away food particles and stimulates saliva production, which naturally protects your teeth against decay.

– Using a tongue scraper: Cleaning your tongue helps remove bacteria responsible for bad breath.

Remember, consulting with your dentist is always beneficial for personalised advice and recommendations based on your specific dental needs.
