Why Dentures?

A Denture is an oral appliance that replaces missing teeth. If you’ve lost your natural teeth, Dentures can restore your smile. Dentures will help you eat more efficiently and speak more clearly. The loss of a substantial number of teeth often causes your facial muscles to sag, affecting the way you look and feel.

There are several different types of dentures:

– Conventional, which is placed in your mouth after teeth are removed, and the gums have healed

– Immediate, which is inserted on the same day that teeth are removed

– Overdenture, which allows for some natural teeth to be saved. This Denture fits over remaining natural teeth to stay in place.

You don’t have to live with missing teeth. Kai Dental offers several Denture options that can improve the look of your smile. Your Dentist can help you decide which Denture is right for you.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Following an initial consultation with one of our Dentists your bespoke set of full or partial dentures will be created. We use 3D digital imaging to take an accurate impression of your teeth so they will be an ideal fit, and digital scanning ensures measurements of the mouth are precise. The false teeth are attached to a plate that can be removed when sleeping and for cleaning, and each individual tooth is created to match the size, shape and tone of your natural teeth.

2-3 appointments are often required when fitting dentures; your initial consultation, taking measurements and impressions of the mouth and teeth and fitting of the dentures.

Recovery & Aftercare

Part of your treatment plan for dentures will include advice on how to care for your new set of teeth, and what to expect whilst you get used to wearing them. Dentures are a great way to help to restore your smile to its original appearance. In addition, dentures provide more support to the mouth area and the rest of your face, replacing the job carried out by your natural teeth. However, it’s important to note that dentures will not improve your oral health, and a good dental health routine should be maintained in order to prevent future issues developing with your remaining teeth and the gums.

FAQS

How do I care for my dentures?

Your dentures will need to be cleaned everyday using a soft toothbrush and denture paste – normal toothpaste will not be suitable. The use of a denture cleanser, available over-the-counter, will help to reduce stubborn stains from occurring – this can be done at night when you’re sleeping.

Why can’t I use regular toothpaste to clean my dentures?

Toothpaste is specially designed for use on teeth and is formulated using chemicals and materials that enamel is strong enough to withstand. As the material used to create dentures is weaker (although very durable), there is a chance that regular toothpaste will scratch the surface.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

Although you can sleep in your dentures, it is advised that you remove them at night to help relieve the pressure on your gums. If you do decide to sleep in your dentures it’s important that you find some time during the day to give them a proper clean, as well as the rest of your mouth.

What should I do if my dentures are broken?

If your dentures break you’ll need to have them replaced or repaired. You should contact your dentist and schedule an appointment so you can arrange the next steps.

What shall I do if my dentures seem to be loose?

If your dentures feel loose you should schedule an appointment with your dentist who will investigate the cause. If your dentures have become loose over time it could be the case that the bone beneath the gum has naturally shrunk, or the attachment parts have become worn down. Your dentist or prosthodontist will advise the best course of action.
